Total\u00a0giving to charitable organizations<\/strong>\u00a0was $410.02 billion\u00a0in 2017<\/strong>\u00a0(2.1% of GDP). This is an increase of 5.2% in current dollars and 3.0% in inflation-adjusted dollars from 2016. According to Giving USA 2018<\/a><\/em>, the Annual Report on Philanthropy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amid a complex climate for\u00a0charitable giving<\/strong>, American individuals, bequests, foundations and corporations gave an estimated $427.71 billion to U.S. charities\u00a0in 2018<\/strong>, according to\u00a0Giving<\/strong>\u00a0USA 2019: The Annual Report on Philanthropy for the Year\u00a02018<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As in previous years, the majority of giving came from individuals. Specifically, individuals gave $286.65 billion, accounting for 70% of all giving and representing a 3.0% increase over 2016. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2193<\/strong> Giving to education <\/strong>is estimated to have declined by 1.3% (decreasing 3.7% adjusted for inflation), to $58.72 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

=<\/strong> Giving to human services <\/strong>is estimated to have stayed relatively flat, decreasing by 0.3% (a decrease of 2.7% adjusted for inflation), totaling $51.54 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2193<\/strong> Giving to foundations <\/strong>is estimated to have decreased by 6.9% (declining by 9.1% adjusted for inflation) to $50.29 billion, based on data provided by Candid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

=<\/strong> Giving to health organizations <\/strong>is estimated to have had flat growth of 0.1% (a decline of 2.3% adjusted for inflation) at $40.78 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2193<\/strong> Giving to public-society benefit organizations <\/strong>decreased by an estimated 3.7% (decreasing 6.0% adjusted for inflation), to $31.21 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

=<\/strong> Giving to arts, culture, and humanities <\/strong>is estimated to have stayed relatively flat, increasing 0.3% (declining 2.1% adjusted for inflation) to $19.49 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
